San Mateo County, Calif., HIV/AIDS Services Could Be Impacted By Proposed State Budget Cuts, Official Says
A San Mateo County, Calif., program that provides in-home case management services for people living with HIV/AIDS, as well as other programs that assist people living with the virus, could be eliminated, forcing patients to obtain more expensive outpatient care, if proposed state budget cuts are approved, the San Francisco Examiner reports. John Conley, director of public health programs for San Mateo County, said case management services are alternatives to hospitalization or nursing facility care, which are more expensive. "Additionally, the state"s AIDS office will not allow municipalities to make reductions to case management activities or other requirements such as client/staff ratios, according to county officials," the Examiner reports. Conley said, the state is paying half the costs of the program, but the program is "becoming very, very expensive to run" (Koskey, 7/23).

No Known Connection Between Childhood Abuse And Lupus
In recent news reports, there was a statement made that abuse experienced as a child can later lead to the development of autoimmune diseases, including lupus. There is no scientific evidence to support this statement, either in humans or animal models of lupus. Stress is sometimes listed as a "trigger" for a lupus flare in a patient that has lupus. Even this hypothesis is only supported by anecdotal data and not a well defined clinical study. There is clearly a connection between the immune system and the nervous system. Stress can induce a number of physiologic changes that can last for varying periods of time. To suggest, however, that child abuse is an accepted cause of lupus is inaccurate and unsupportable until there is clear data linking childhood abuse with later development of lupus.

New Data Show Cost Savings Achieved By Treating Mild And Moderate Alzheimer's Patients With Aricept(R)

Researchers attending the annual meeting of the International Society for Pharmacoeconomics & Outcomes Research (ISPOR), heard today that prescribing Aricept® (donepezil hydrochloride) as soon as patients are diagnosed with either mild or moderate Alzheimer"s disease saves the NHS money. The findings contradict the recommendation by NICE that these medicines are not cost effective in the early stages of the disease, a decision that has been the subject of much recent debate. The study shows that direct savings to the NHS over a ten year period average over ÷£4,000 per patient for those starting treatment in the mild stages of the disease. Total savings to society rise to ÷£7,100 per patient when the cost of care giver"s time is included. The average direct saving to the NHS over the same period for patients across the mild and moderate stages of the disease was estimated to be ÷£2,300 per patient, and for society ÷£4,800 when care giver"s time is taken into account. The study, sponsored by Eisai, uses more accurate calculations and more up-to-date costs of Alzheimer"s disease treatment than were used in the analyses undertaken by NICE, and the authors conclude that their findings indicate the decision taken by NICE to restrict treatment to patients with moderate Alzheimer"s disease was highly questionable.
